At the conclusion of my Total Quality Auditing seminar, within my “Auditing with GRIT” session, I always show the video of the baby bear that slides down the mountain (several times) before successfully making it to the top to meet it’s (assumed) mother…. (see video at https://youtu.be/RGa5qGj48C4 if you have no idea what I am talking about)…

And can I just tell you, this group’s reaction to this video was OFF THE CHARTS good. They had so much empathy for this little bear… and the struggle it was facing as it tried to get up the mountain several times.  They also cheered so loud when he/she made it to the top finally! I loved every minute of their reaction and I really wish I had captured it on video.  But you will just have to picture them through this image!

What is my point? Well, one thing we ALL have in common – we all face challenges in our lives.  We all get knocked down a time or two (or three, or MORE).  But the important thing is that we continue to have GRIT… that we have the passion and the perseverance to keep going, and to get through those obstacles and challenges life presents us with.

Internal Audit is a complicated field where a great auditor has to combine the knowledge of a multitude of operational and financial processes (not to mention technologies) with the curiosity to find the risky and unusual items, and to have the ability to establish relationships and build trust along the way in order to successfully present their findings.  And let’s be honest, they have to do all this while not necessarily being greeted with open arms by their client (maybe like that momma bear greeting the baby bear when it reached the top the first time???)…

So, I like to ask my TQA attendees, do they have the qualities to be a gritty auditor?

  • Are you passionate about your organization, client, and engagements?
  • Do you look forward to delivering your real value-add, quality findings to management?
  • Do you believe in the bigger purpose of auditing and its impact on your organization or client?
